On a beautiful sunny day last summer, I, my umbrella and my wellies headed off on a road trip. Where to? Wandering aimlessly through the English countryside, or rather the garden of England, Kent.
You might be wondering why I needed wellies in the height of summer. The answer is not surprising - the unpredictable British weather! When you put on that gorgeous ruffle dress and all the blackest black clouds come to see you! It must be the dress!
The Walk
It was a sunny and clear day and I was eager to explore the low hills of Kent. Against the vast blue sky, I noticed strangely pointed roofs. It was the first time I had seen these old houses that were typical of the area. Excitedly, I walked around them to get a closer look.
The quaint buildings have been part of hop farms since the 15th century and housed huge drying kilns. Some of them are open to visitors while others have been renovated and converted into hotels. Although I didn’t get to peek inside, I was fascinated by the surrounding country houses and the beautiful old vases in the windows.
A white-brown English spaniel merrily hopped up to me and greeted me with a wagging tail. But as an enthusiastic tourist, I could not take my eyes off those quirky roofs. The towering houses and their colourful gardens full of roses, geraniums, wildflowers and striking rhododendrons got me thinking.
The Idea
I have always admired the rustic design and farmhouse interiors. Vintage vases, pots and frames - what if I create such beauty and cosiness? The peacefulness of country houses is all we need these days.
Wooden furniture and beautiful decorative objects are reminiscent of my grandma’s house and my childhood. I grew up in Eastern Europe where houses were different. On the first floor, there was usually a wide-open veranda with pots of multicoloured pansies and crawling geraniums hanging on the railing. It was not uncommon to see patterned rugs with traditional motifs stretched over the railing. The serenity and timelessness of those bygone days are my most cherished memories.
The Result – Shabby Chic Mason Jars
Lost in thoughts, I went home and googled. I found local craft supply stores, paints and brushes. I have already had an idea of what I wanted to do.
That is how my first multipurpose, slightly distressed mason jars came about. They can be used as dried flower vases, as well as hair or cosmetic accessories holders on your dressing table. In addition, they are applicable as pen or marker pots on your desk or in the children’s room.

The follow-up - How do I Get Inspired
This is how I create my items. Inspiration strikes when I travel or just wander around. I am provoked by different situations, people, views, and even buildings - majestic and dignified like centuries-old cathedrals. For instance, while recently waiting for a bus at a bus station, I ran into a clamour between those waiting in line and the bus driver. Meanwhile, bored with the argument, I was scanning the impressive ornaments on the wall and thinking about where I could entwine them.
Thus, I thank my wellies for walking me around and providing me with ideas and incentives to create.
