An art exhibition I recently attended reminded me of that special time in our lives, the holidays. It is a time to unwind, recharge our batteries, daydream, and create memories. It is a time set aside for ourselves - to ponder, introspect and escape reality.
Introspect
While wandering the narrow streets and sunny hills of southern Spain, I stumbled upon ancient Moorish ruins - a medieval Arabic bath. It had been one of the most popular spots in old Ronda, where people would convene to socialise and reflect on their deeds and matters. This community activity was considered a vital component of maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Two of the most stunning Moorish fortresses are the Alhambra in Granada and the Alcazaba in Malaga. Visitors can spend hours exploring the intricate gardens adorned with bright hibiscus and colourful bougainvillaea.

Are these not the perfect places to clear your mind and organise your thoughts? Scientific research shows that we are experiencing constant stress, which puts our brains in a protective or fight-or-flight mode. This has significant long-term effects on brain function.
Reflect
Let us move to another epoch – the iconic works of Gaudi and his contemporaries. One may wonder how those architects created such modernistic facades, shapes and ornaments. What inspired them? Gaudi would search construction sites for colourful tiles and pottery. He would then embed them into his structures, giving them new life and preserving the past. Was this not a process of contemplation and reflection?

You can do something similar – take time to consider what you want to keep with you, and what you can let go of. Examine your mindset and emotional reactions, and prepare to navigate the constant change and complexity of today's world.
Return to Reality
Returning to the mundane after such an inner journey can be disturbing and frustrating. Boost your well-being by using the energy gained from your journey. Let your travel experiences inspire you to start a new project or hobby.
Why not try your hand at expressive writing? It involves writing down your deepest thoughts and feelings. It turns out to be a remarkable anti-stress therapy!
